On September 16, 1975, Papua New Guinea gained its independence from Australia. This year marks 51 years. Every year our village holds sports tournaments and a culture show throughout the week leading up to the celebration. Caleb joined in all the men’s games—soccer, basketball, and volleyball. Elijah would have loved to play too, but he fractured his wrist three weeks ago while playing basketball at the mission compound.
Every day I go down with Bella to watch some of the games. I try to talk with people and visit, yet because I’m the village nurse, many still primarily see me as the source of Band-Aids and Tylenol. It can feel a bit limiting at times. So I bring a small bag of basic supplies to help with twisted ankles or cuts that need covering during the games. For anything more, I simply point them to clinic hours later in the week.
Even with all the activity last week and this week, we noticed they scheduled no games during our Lord’s Day meeting. That was a first in all our years here. These small gestures encourage us that the Lord is working little by little.
Caleb preached from Mark 6:7-13 on Jesus sending out the twelve apostles. I never fully know how the message is received or whether people continue to think about it afterward. Still, I pray the Holy Spirit will open their eyes.
Independence Day itself was good, though long. We returned to the house several times for water and snacks. The main men of the village asked Caleb and me to speak to the community—another first, and a real honor for us.
Please continue to pray for the Lord’s work here. We are seeing the fruit of your prayers. Praise be to the Lord!
